This past Saturday Jenny and I went grocery shopping which took up a huge chunk of the day for multiple reasons. We could not find the 'Best Buy', not to be confused with the electronic store. So driving through all the narrow roads downtown Basseterre we finally fell upon the Best Buy. Then it took me awhile to budget everything I put in the cart! I like to gt my deals and am always concious of name brand prices so I often had to get my phone calculator out to convert EC currency to USD. Pain in the but, I am sure I will learn to divide by 2.67 easily by the time I leave here lol. Also, prices are not always listed on the items so multiple price checks are neccessary. In everything going on I did not realize that most of my frozen vegies (yes I got frozen veggies, mom would be proud) and hotpockets (haha) were almost completely thawed due to the heat. Yikes! When the power goes out we are screwed!
The coconut never lies!
Just brushing up on some carbohydrate and protein digestion on the beach, no big deal (:
and the piece de resistance...(the golf course for RJ when he visits)
Semester olympics. Each class has their own color. There are a series of events throughtout the week, ultimate frisbee, soccer, flag football, volleyball. I only played in the really intense soccer game for a short while, the students are pretty hard core and I am too far into relaxing island mode to be that aggressive.
Best part of every event is the students bring their animals!!! Some of them even use food coloring to dye their dogs fur (totally safe).
Jenny's cat Orion is absolutely thrilled to have three stray female orange and white cats prowling around our apartment...Notice the string intertwined in the bars ont he window. One of the first days we were here Orion took his little front paw and slowly knocked out the screen in my window in my room. He squeezed through the bars and was just about to jump into the St. Kitts cane fields wilderness when Jenny grabbed him! Thank god!
Pistachio rum!!! (for mom, dad, Joel, and Jason)
So last night they had an event called Mr. RUSVM (Mr. Ross University School of Veterinary Med). They also had a toga party on Friday night but Jenny and I were lazy slaps that ended up regaling eachother with youtube videos. Nonetheless we did go to the Mr. RUSVM which was surprising very fun. Due to the small amount of males in the school they put on this event so the guys can get together and make funny skits. I tried to download the video of 1st semester representative - Bill - down a "rap" but it wounldn't download. Bill is quiet the character so it was pretty amusing.
It took place at Royal St. Kitts which I am pretty sure is the gold course. There were a lot of people there, however, I didn't get the high heels and dressy skirt memo that many of the girls were wearing.
These are girls from my orientation group, Caroline (Texas), Jenny (NY), and Tiffany (Cali). Super nice and sweet girls.
So this is a funny parady of the Chris Farley SNL skit 'van down by the river'. The student replaced this with a 'suzuki samuri down by shipwreck beach'.
At a bar called Ziggys on a strip of beach where a lot of bars are. Apperently someone thought it was a good idea to give me a sparkler after a couple Caribe beers and a delicious concoction called Rum punch. Now, there is a big issue with alcohol down here that I learned last night. There are a couple local microbrews that the brewery on the island make and bottle including stag and caribe. I like caribe the best. So because it is a microbrew being brewed on an island, no two batches are the same leaving some beers really strong. I had a couple of these last week and felt fine, last night this was not the case. Also, after I finished my rum punch my lovely friend Brittany informed me it was loaded with booze...so lesson learned. I still had a great time, and apparently both of these forms of alcohol combined make you want to have dance offs with local Kittitians.
